Week 4

  1. I chose this meme because it is relatable to my own way of thinking. Often times I find myself in the same situation of puzzled thought about how or why somebody is texting me differently than normal.
    The linguistic message in this meme is that of mathematics; trying very hard to decipher something, attempting to overcome a difficult issue.
    The denoted message is the face of the confused woman that seems to be interpreting a difficult math equation.
    The connoted image of this meme is shown through the complexity of the equation and the look of the woman’s face. In addition to many other restrictions when texting, nobody can actually figure out why somebody might be sending messages that are slightly different than normal. This complexity, with the math equation and confused face, create the rhetoric for this meme.
  2. friendtextxI chose this meme because of its humor. It relates to me because I used to play with the toy similar to that shown in the image.
    The linguistic message in this meme is that of a play on word, with a modern terror threat, and a child’s toy relating to weapons used by soldiers abroad.
    The denoted message is that of a childish wordplay; using past tense of the word ‘is’, twice. This is furthered by a child’s toy that would simply make any soldier laugh if brought to a battle.
    The connoted image is a combination of a child with a harmless gun, and a wordplay so simple one might argue a child might actually interpret the name isis as the word ‘is’, twice.isis-waswas
  3. I chose this meme because it is a simple camera angle setup, along with a facial expression that set the scene for a very funny caption.
    The linguistic message behind this image is that the two men are hiding their faces from the paparazzi while the police man smiles in content of catching the criminals, while dragging behind him their chain in which their both fastened to.
    The denoted message in this image is comes from the caption. After reading it, readers begin to understand that the expression on the police man’s face could mean something other than the satisfaction for justicelol-jf
