In the world of DJ’ing and electronic music production, a brand image is of utmost importance. This particular figure has taken the art of image branding and music production to new heights in 2016.
In early 2015, Marshmello remixed songs by Jack Ü and Zedd, this sparked the recognition of his brand and started to pull in listeners of the already well established genre of electronic dance music. After releasing his first original record “WaVeZ” on his SoundCloud page in March of the same year, the track grew exponentially through recognition from already well established artists, such as Skrillex, who shared mello’s debut songs on his social medias and live DJ performances. It was this quick rise to fame that, to some, made it all seem sugar coated.
Through the success of other masked DJs such as Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Cazzette, and more. Marshmello appears at all times to be wearing a marshmallow helmet. This LED lit helmet and all white outfit combination ties the brand image of Marshmello together. But the question remains; despite the quick claim to fame… Who IS marshmello?
Marshmello has not officially declared his identity, however the intriguing nature of the subject was no match for the EDM community at large. Through several clues as provided, the community has found connections that tie together marshmello and another producer/DJ known as Dotcom, or Chris Comstock.
Firstly, during an interview with Skrillex, the reporter Katie Couric notices Sonny’s phone is ringing, and announces on camera that ‘Chris’ is calling. Skrillex then proceeds to answer his phone and call ‘Chris’ by his stage name Marshmello.
Secondly, a ripped jean showing similar tattoos between artist Dotcom and Marshmello.
And finally, a birthday bash for Marshmello at Omnia nightclub in San Diego, CA. Coincidentally, mello and Dotcom share the same birthday of May 19, and to most, this fact puts the nail in the coffin about the true identity of this new masked DJ treat.
Besides the fact that Marshmello is just a brand image re-invention. You cannot lie that his music is pretty damn enjoyable. His live performances, accompanied in most cases by other superstar DJ’s are, a sweet treat in themselves.
